It is the 39th largest state, with an area of 33,741 square miles. Maine is a New England state, located in northeastern United States. Its largest city is Portland. The land is generally rolling country with mountains in the northwest, and more than 2000 lakes. The state's chief rivers are the St John, Penobscot, Kennebec, and St Croix. John Cabot explored Maine in 1498. British settlement, at Fort Saint George, was first attempted in 1607, and permanent colonization began in the 1620s. However, French and Native American resistance hindered British settlement efforts. In 1652, Maine came under the administration of the Massachusetts Bay Company, and then of the Massachusetts colony in 1691. Maine's trading ports and timber resources have spurred economic development; fishing and tourism are important industries as well.
